14 years have passed – or how one day changed everything…
Good ideas often come to you when you least expect it. That’s exactly how it happened this time. The idea of creating my own brand came to me in 2011. I already had experience selling Danish brands in Poland, but that was when a few things suddenly started falling into place…
First: my friend Marlena was (and still is!) a real trendsetter — she always knows what we’ll be wearing before it even hits the streets.
Second: although we didn’t have a concrete idea for a collection yet, Ania, who ran her own sewing workshop, approached us with a proposal to collaborate.
Third: we already had a few of our own stores and a loyal group of customers.
And most importantly: we loved great clothes! Head over heels.
I thought: “Something has to be done about this. Let’s sew a few styles as a test and see how our customers react.” And that’s when it all began.
The idea — great in theory — turned out to be far from easy in practice. I remember meeting at my place and, sitting on the floor on packing paper, sketching out our first patterns. At first it was chaos, but luckily fortune was on our side. We found professionals — patient, open and kind — both at the knitting mills and later at the sewing workshops. They believed in two amateurs with heads full of ideas and sky-high ambitions.
And where does the name come from? One night, lying in bed, my eyes fell on Tom Robbins’ book Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas. It immediately made me think of a sleepless night, when your head is racing with ideas. Sleeplessness is “insomnia.” And “by…” just somehow felt natural. And that’s how by Insomnia was born — a brand that’s part of who I am...
